White Wine of the Year: The Finalists

The Finalists

For over 25 years, White Wine of the Year has been the most popular white wine subscription we offer. In that time, some of the biggest names in Australian wine have played a starring role – Lindeman’s, Tyrrell’s, Yalumba, and Zonte’s Footstep, as well as rising stars like Ribbon Hills, Avon Brae and Hawkesbridge.

The award has become a tradition for thousands of our customers and it’s now such an important part of their annual wine journey.

White Wine of the Year subscribers receive priority access to the year’s best white, at the year’s best price. They also have the opportunity to enjoy three superb mixed dozens: The Hall Of Fame (May), The Search (September), and the Finalists (November).

Discover the year's finest whites.

Each year you’ll receive your Reservation of the Search in September, the Finalists in November, the overall Winner in February and the Hall of Fame in May.

Wine of the Year
  • Ribbon Hills Straight Line Pinot Gris 2020

TASTE MAP: A superb New Zealand Pinot Gris that offers incredible depth and complexity. Rich aromas of peach and fig fill the glass. On the palate, flavours of ripe pear dominate with a flinty, mineral texture teasing out the long and supple finish.

ENJOY WITH: Grilled lamb chops with fresh lemon and oregano.

To love Marlborough Pinot Gris is only human. It’s divine. Rich, flinty and fruit-driven, the Straight Line Pinot Gris from Ribbon Hills offers solid support for the variety’s booming proliferation in the region. A thoroughly deserving contender for White Wine of the Year and essential for any summer barbeque.

  • Neil McGuigan Signature Series Chardonnay 2020

TASTE MAP: Starting with scents of stone fruit and vanilla, this medium-weighted wine delivers great complexity. Oaky and buttery on the palate, it’s kept in check by a lovely spine of fresh acidity which lends the wine balance and length.

ENJOY WITH: A lavish platter of picked crab, lobster and Balmain bug.

It’s hardly surprising to see an International Winemaker of the Year winner on this list. Neil McGuigan has delivered yet another wine of exceptional quality with his Signature Series Chardonnay. Creamy, smooth and easy to drink, it’s everything you want from a Hunter Valley Chard’ and then some.

  • Cloud Temple Chenin Blanc 2021

TASTE MAP: Lifted aromatics of honeysuckle and pear drops with a hint of vanilla with a generous palate of nashi pear, white stone fruit and preserved lemon. Notes of brioche find room alongside a creamy texture and long, juicy finish.

ENJOY WITH: Pan-fried white fish and crispy roast potatos.

Rich. Powerful. Complex. We’re talking about Cloud Temple’s Chenin Blanc, of course. Strutting its way into this list with style and aplomb, this good-time wine ain’t shy and absolutely loves food. It’s easy to see why Chenin Blanc is enjoying such newfound popularity, especially in the hands of winemaker Rory Parks.

  • Usher Tinkler Ninth Fable Semillon 2021

TASTE MAP: A little fruitier than its Hunter Valley counterparts, this Semillon is full of life. It’s fresh and fragrant on the nose with lemon and grapefruit aromatics. Citrus continues onto the palate with crisp, mouthwatering acidity.

ENJOY WITH: Freshly shucked oysters doused in mignonette dressing.

Producing wine that makes you want to sing “Hallelujah”, it’s rather fitting that Usher Tinkler’s cellar door operates out of the original Pokolbin Church. A mouthwatering modern twist on Hunter Valley Semillon, this is a white wine worthy of a place at the top.

  • Chapel Hill Pinot Grigio 2021

TASTE MAP: Landing on the drier end of the spectrum, this wine has a chalky, textural mouthfeel. Delicate aromas of wildflower and citrus blossom give way to summery fruit flavours. Think green pear and mandarin peel. A lick of fresh herb ties it all together.

ENJOY WITH: Garlicky king prawn linguine and fresh tomato salad..

It takes something special to stand head and shoulders above a region’s stalwart variety (Sauvignon Blanc, in this case), but special is precisely what this Pinot Grigio is. Utterly sophisticated but as drinkable as it gets, there are very few wines we’d rather be pouring right now. Praise be to Chapel Hill; this is one for the ages.

  • Kilikanoon Mulga Riesling 2019

TASTE MAP: Fresh citrus and hints of green apple combine seductively on the nose. Poised yet packed full of flavour, the palate brings together notes of lemon and lime with a zesty acidity. Thoroughly enjoyable right now, cellaring will add roundness and complexity.

ENJOY WITH: Khao soi from your local Thai spot.

Clare Valley was practically made for Riesling. Or was it the other way around? In any case, the father and son team behind Kilikanoon are resolute in their mission to bottle the terroir as faithfully and tastefully as possible. If the 2019 Mulga Riesling is anything to go by, they’re nailing it.
