Wine of the Year
  • Alkoomi 'Charlotte' Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

ENJOY WITH: A juicy beef and blue cheese burger.

Leave it to the vineyard that put Frankland River on the map to deliver a wine of this calibre. Earthy and peppery on the nose with bold flavours of ripe cassis and mulberry fruit, this is WA Cab Sauv at its best. Velvety, spicy tannins meet subtly integrated oak for a complex yet graceful finish.

  • Stefano di Pieri Fleurieu Shiraz Mataro 2019

    ENJOY WITH: Lamb ragu pappardelle.

This solid Italian-style blend is big on flavour. Plum, blackberry and mulberry aromatics are held together by a peppery spice. Generous on the palate, the gentle oaky complexity lifts layers of dark red fruit to the fore while the soft tannins deliver a long and luscious finish.

  • Altero Fleurieu Sangiovese 2019

ENJOY WITH: Antipasti of anchovies, burrata and fresh tomato.

Nourished by the waters of Currency Creek, this is an earthy wine. Oaky tea leaf aromas open up to a refreshing palate of strawberry and sour cherry. A touch of spice provides ballast. Time will soften its tannins and round out the acidity, but it’s already superb.

  • Rock of Solitude Purple Patch Geographe GSM 2019

ENJOY WITH: Salmon steak in plenty of butter and garlic.

Traditionally speaking, GSM is a Rhône Valley blend. But this, from Ironcloud Wines, feels right at home in Western Australia’s Ferguson Valley. Fresh and vibrant on the nose with notes of blueberry, violet and spice. Juicy flavours of blackberry and plum sit comfortably atop delicate but lengthy tannins.

  • Velvet Road Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

ENJOY WITH: Steak over the coals

Packing all that grandiosity into an accessible, ready to drink wine looks easy here, but make no mistake: this is a true feat. Dark berry and spice aromatics are followed by concentrated flavours of dark fruit and chocolate. The finish is long and textural with well-integrated tannins.

  • Woods Crampton Barossa Shiraz 2021

ENJOY WITH: Grilled vegetables straight from the barbie.

This is classic Barossa. Lovely and larger than life; floral with a touch of blueberry on the nose. Flavours of plum and blackberry are underscored by a supple tannic structure and a lingering chocolatey finish. Utterly drinkable, this may be one of the best value reds going.
