Vermentino is an aromatic grape that is completely at home in Mclaren Vale. With its origins in north west Italy it benefits from proximity to the ocean. This Gold medal example comes from 5 Red Star winery Angove, a family owned winery that excels at producing top quality McLaren Vale wines. Full of guava, lychee and lemons, the crisp, clean palate goes beautifully with fresh seafood.

Sourced from two vineyards, the first, owned by the Oliver family is located in the Seaview sub region of McLaren Vale, 6 kilometres from the ocean. The vineyard aspect is east facing with a consistent even slope and the soil is dark red loam. This warm site allows the Vermentino vines to thrive and produce beautifully aromatic grapes. Grapes were picked on the 6th of February, 2016. The second vineyard, located just off California Road near the coastal village of Port Willunga is just 4 kilometres from the ocean and has alluvial soils promoting balanced canopies and delivering grapes that have a fresh crispness and sea spray character. Grapes were picked on the 17th of February, 2016. Fruit was picked in the quiet, pre-dawn hours and then soft pressed as quickly as possible in our small batch winery. After cold settling some of the heavier solids the still slightly cloudy juice was carefully racked to cooled fermentation tanks where it was slowly fermented to retain freshness and vibrancy. A short period of time on yeast lees helped develop texture and complexity. Wine was bottled with no fining and a light filtration.
