WA produces some of the best wines in the country thanks to a glorious maritime climate. The grape crops are treated to coolish growing seasons and some of the mildest winters in Australia; long, sunny autumn days ripen them to absolute perfection and winemakers have little fear of damage from frost or rain at vintage time. The Abbey View range of wines began in 1993 with an outstanding Mount Barker Cabernet from Michael Goundrey. Based in Mount Barker, in the Lower Great Southern area of Western Australia, Goundrey Wines was founded by Mike and Alison Goundrey in 1976, from a winery that was also their garage! Now under the ownership of Perth businessman, Jack Bendat, Goundrey is at the point where they are now the region's largest producer, with both substantial national and international distribution. His investment has paid off with the winning of the 'Schenker trophy', for best Australian Wine Producer. Their wines may not always be the wine show trophy winners, but they are remarkably consistent and of a high quality and value.
