Background

The 2017 vintage was one of the latest vintages in recent times, reminiscent more of the vintages of the 90's. With an abundance of groundwater, soil temperatures remained cool in turn delaying budburst by three to four weeks. Flowering and fruit set were also exceptional due to the levels of groundwater. Although it was a challenging vintage (with some unseasonal downpours and a later start and finish), the combination of a long, cold wet winter and the mild summer has resulted in some exceptional fruit. The 2017 Margaret River Friends & Rivals Chardonnay was picked at optimum ripeness during the coolest period of the night to help retain the primary fruit flavours. It was transported directly to the winery post-harvest, then crushed and pressed to tank, and allowed to cold settle. The juice was racked with some light lees to add to the texture and inoculated. Fermented in a combination of older barrels and some new French oak. Post fermentation the lees were stirred gently until the balance between oak, lees and fruit characters was achieved. The wine was then blended, fined and bottled.
