Background
Each individual block on this vineyard is distinctive and charismatic due to its expressive geology and unique meso-climate. At our winery vineyard we are fortunate to be the custodians of one of the most unique and inspiring vineyard sites in McLaren Vale. The picturesque undulating hills and ancient geological formations are enhanced by our elevation, as the site perfectly capitalises on the cleansing coastal influence. In the late 1850s, the local Methodist settlers of McLaren Vale were gifted a parcel of land on which they would build a chapel. The generous donor was a Mr. William Vinecombe. Just over 100 years later the congregation closed the doors of the ironstone Seaview Chapel for the last time. The little chapel, perched on top a hill in Northern McLaren Vale, fell into disrepair. Then, in the early 1970s, Adelaide Professor Thomas Nelson gave the chapel new life by restoring the old building and planting the first vines that would go on to become Chapel Hill winery - a cheeky move considering the chapel's Methodist roots. The defining feature of the renovation was the gorgeous Glaswegian stained glass window dating back to 1770 - an inspiration for the winery's current logo. A decade or so later and Chapel Hill was making a name for itself as an award-winning winery under the guidance of Pam Dunsford, the first female to study winemaking at Roseworthy, a pretty big achievement at the time. Fast-forward to today and you can find Michael Fragos, Chapel Hill's CEO and Chief Winemaker, hard at work in the vineyard or barrel room crafting a new vintage of premium-quality McLaren Vale wines.
