The Caillard Mataro is one of the rarest of all Australian single variety wines. Mataro is normally blended away with Shiraz or other reds, but this exquisite wine proves that it is more than capable of enchanting in its own right. This example is beautifully fragrant with an elegant, medium-bodied palate with fine supple lacy tannins, plenty of fruit complexity and underlying savoury notes.

Background

Our 2011 Caillard Mataro captures the essence of this extraordinarily versatile and resilient grape variety. It is particularly suited to South Australia's elemental landscape of extremes. 2011 was a year of water. After a cycle of drought and parched soils, the rains quenched the land, filled dams and gave vineyards the best drink in years. Mataro, being of sturdy stuff and rigid self-regulation, sipped rather than partied; it once again triumphs in the face of extremes. After traditional vinification in open-fermenters the wine is matured in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques for an extended period of around 18 months to allow the fruit to develop richness, volume and complexity. Vineyard characters, winemaking nuances and maturation notes are all harmonised in the wine through intuitive feel and rigorous blending. Behind our label lies an incredible interconnection of heart and soul from the vineyard to the table. We simply could not make this wine without the generosity of spirit of others.
