Rated 94 points by James Halliday, who writes: 65% grenache planted '60 and 35% mataro planted '08, open-fermented, matured in used French oak, the grenache for 5 months, mataro for 6 months before blending. Superb colour; at maximum turbocharged revolutions, but the power is smoothly delivered across the palate. Because the balance is very good, this richly endowed wine will repay cellaring particularly well.

Palate

Summer berry fruits, wild herbs, lively mouth feel with light sandy tannins. Raspberry chocolate bullets, black tea leaves and gutsy earthiness to finish, pleasant after grip and a sweet trickle of fruit on the back palate.

Background

Corner of Hunt and Sand Road, McLaren Vale. Growers Margaret Leask, Richard and Malcolm Leask. Grenache (65% of wine) was established in 1960, own rootstock, Heritage clone. It is hand spur pruned, two wire vertical, single cordon. Next to the Grenache is the Mataro (35% of wine) established in 2008, Petit Verdot rootstock, G7V1 clone. Geology is Christies Beach Formation, alluvial fan of sand, clay and gravel. The soil here is reddish brown loam with some iron sandstone deposits from the nearby slopes and creek. pressings were combined. 50% of the wine was then transferred to 3 year old French oak hogsheads where it underwent malo-lactic fermentation. After 6 months in Oak, the wine was bottled at night following a micro screen filtration, on October 6, 2017. This wine is sealed under Stelvin screwcap. Vegan friendly wine. A healthy 2016 winter and plenty of spring rains set the vines up very well. Flowering was quite late, which meant a delayed start to harvest, and long, even ripening periods. It was very dry from February to April, with only a few millimetres of rain. However, days were mild with a lot of cool nights, we had to be patient for the last bits of fruit to ripen. Overall, a very pleasant vintage with minimal disease pressure and above average crop levels. Almost an 'old school' vintage, allowing for good picking decision making, depending on what style for each variety we wanted to make. Generally, we went for fragrance and juicy fruit, not richness. In the winery, it was relaxed so we were able to add character through extended fermentation and gentle extraction.
