Blackberry and briarry bush with hints of spice and subtle oak.


Bright black and blue berry flavours follow on from the nose, complexed by hints of spice. Firm but fine tannins and a lingering finish complete the wine.


The Hanging Rock winery is owned by John and Annie (nee Tyrrell) Ellis. Situated in the Macedon ranges not far from Melbourne, they produce wines from their own 6 hectare vineyard including a premium sparkling wine under the Macedon label. John sources fruit from all over Victoria to make top quality whites and fantastic reds.John Ellis is one of the most highly regarded vignerons in the country and he produces some of Australia's best table wines, having won over 36 gold medals for top Australian Shiraz. John's career started at Rosemount Estate, where he met his future wife Ann Tyrell, the late Murray Tyrrell's daughter. In 1978, he moved to Victoria to set up Tisdall Wines, a leading winery that exports to the UK, Hong Kong and Japan. Following his success there, the Ellises bought 'the Jim Jim' - a 6-million-year-old extinct volcano on which his winery Hanging Rock now stands, in the cool-climate Macedon ranges. Today, John is an active believer in organic viticulture. Over the past 15 years, he has used various types of mulches including rice hulls and straw in drier climates. He sees green organics as a real solution to improving soil structure and moisture retention in the elevated dry climate vineyards in Victoria.
