History meets Innovation
Situated in the picturesque north of South Australia, Clare Valley is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions. While other South Australian regions like McLaren Vale and the Barossa often get all the attention, it is in the Clare Valley to the north that the state’s oldest winery can be found.
Jesuit brothers established the Sevenhill winery in 1851 to produce sacramental wine. Today the cellar door is open and connoisseurs can even buy wine online from the brothers. History is important in the area, but innovation and enterprise has always been part of the Clare Valley spirit.
New vines have been planted and wineries in the region are responding to demands and trends. As such, many of the wineries in the Clare Valley have outgrown their best-kept-secret status to become household names.
A Stone’s Throw from Adelaide
The Clare Valley is located 100 kilometres north of Adelaide and is an easy, picturesque drive straight north. The Valley's vineyards start just south of the town of Auburn and continue up until the town of Clare in the north.
The Jewel of South Australia
Riesling is what the Clare Valley is famous for, followed by Shiraz. The unique continental climate brings warm days and cool nights, giving fruit the chance to ripen in the day while retaining the natural balanced acidity when the sun goes down and the temperature drops. The climate is cooler than state neighbours McLaren Vale or the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley Riesling is defined by its refined citrus and lime notes.
Shiraz from the valley is more restrained and balanced than some if its Barossa and McLaren Vale cousins. It’s approachably soft, but still full of spice, cracked-pepper and licorice aromas.
This is a collection of three fantastic Shiraz wines, each with its own unique characteristics. Starting with a full-flavoured wine from Hidden Gate that is full of plum and blackberry fruit, enhanced by oak maturation, with fine tannins. This Shiraz is worth venturing past the hidden gate for! Then we have a premium wine from Mockingbird Hill, a Shiraz crafted from premium fruit gathered from some of the valley’s best vineyards. For the final wine, Tim Adams crafted a rich, soft and spicy Shiraz that’s absolute quality.
With so many incredible Rieslings being made in Clare Valley, it was hard to choose only three wines, but these ones stand out above the rest. Dolan Riflemans is made by legendary winemaker Nigel Dolan and serves up generous lime flavours, with a delicate, crisp mouthfeel and outstanding length. From historic label Taylors comes a bright, zesty wine with classic qualities of lime juice, lime zest and white blossom. Kilikanoon’s Mulga Riesling is a stylish premium Clare Valley Riesling with juicy, crisp lemon and lime characters.
