White Wine of the Year 2017

Learn all about this year’s winner, the Avon Brae Eden Valley Chardonnay 2016

Our White Wine of the Year award is steeped in prestige and is now in its 21st year. It aims to shine a spotlight on the quality of regional white wines from some of the most iconic regions in the Southern Hemisphere crafted by critically-acclaimed winemakers.

Each year our Tasting Panel carefully selects a winning wine from a field of hundreds and we are proud to announce the Avon Brae Eden Valley Chardonnay 2016 as this year’s winner.

Introducing Avon Brae winemaker, Julie Montgomery

Passionate winemaker: Julie Montgomery

The winemaker behind this winning Chardonnay is a woman with a passion for quality. In fact, Julie Montgomery claims it’s an obsession that starts in the vineyard and doesn’t end until the wine is poured into the glass. It’s an attitude that was developed at the start of her career when she first completed a Diploma of Science in Microbiology. From there she went on to work at Yalumba’s famous vine nursery where her eye for detail and a passion for wine came together to create remarkable results just like the 2017 White Wine of the Year.

A region renowned for premium wine

Located in the Barossa Ranges, the Eden Valley was once remote and wild but today it is one of the most cherished areas in Australia for the production of fine white wine. Eden Valley experiences long, slow ripening period which allows for rich, complex flavours to develop, while the elevation and cool climate retain natural acidity, resulting in wines from this region regularly being sought after by collectors.

Cool climate class

Full of cool climate sophistication, the grapes for this winning Chardonnay were sourced entirely from prized vineyards in the Eden Valley’s High Eden and Craneford sub-regions. The palate speaks to its unique origins with white peach and nectarine fruit flavours, a zippy citrus finish and a distinctive mineral acid backbone.

Save a bottle (or two) for later….

While you should definitely open and enjoy your Avon Bare Eden Valley Chardonnay 2016 now, don’t forget that premium Chardonnay also has the potential to develop further. Over time the distinct characters of the fruit and oak will merge, creating flavours, such as fig and butterscotch while the colour will change from a pale straw to a richer, golden hue.

How to enjoy your Avon Brae Eden Valley Chardonnay 2016

With a few bottles safely stored in your cellar, now you’re ready to pair some food with this winning wine. Seafood is always a hit with Chardonnay and we’d recommend BBQ Chili Octopus. This wine has enough richness and weight to handle the spice, while the fine thread of natural acidity is the perfect foil to the fleshy texture of the octopus. For the sweet tooth among us, you can’t go past a bowl of Honeycomb Crème Fraîche Ice Cream. Not only will the wine’s crisp finish nicely offset the sweetness, it will be decadent treat too!
