Cellarmasters favourite Stefano De Pieri has won 2 trophies in the last month for his Shiraz Mataro & Vermentino.

Back-to-back trophies for Stefano de Pieri

Celebrity chef and Cellarmasters favourite Stefano De Pieri has been awarded the trophy for Best Blended Red for his Stefano de Pieri Fleurieu Shiraz Mataro 2016 at the Royal Hobart Wine Show.

“I’m so excited to have won a top award for this beautiful, food friendly wine. It’s a great red wine to enjoy in summer, because the soft tannins in the wine go well with barbequed red meats or chargrilled Portobello mushrooms,” Stefano said.

It is the second trophy in just over two weeks for Stefano. He also picked up the trophy for Best White Italian Variety Wine for his Stefano De Pieri Fleurieu Vermentino 2017 at the Australian Varieties Wine Show earlier this month.

“I think the secret to the success of my wines is that they are beautifully balanced, which means they can be enjoyed on their own or paired with a wide range of food,” he said.

“My approach to making wine is similar to cooking – it’s all about finding the best ingredients. We seek small, delicate parcels of fruit to make fantastic wines,” he added.

The Stefano de Pieri Fleurieu Shiraz Mataro 2016 has according to Joe Armstrong, Head of Wine, quickly become a customer favourite since it was unveiled in September.

“I think our customers love this wine because it’s soft yet complex with lovely dark berry fruit flavours, and it can be paired with a wide range of foods,” he said

He adds that there has been a rise in customer demand for alternative varieties, such as Mataro blends.

“Aussies today are extremely educated and confident when it comes to wine. They want more choice and they are adventurous. They want to try new brands, varietals and regions, and I believe this trend will be even bigger in 2018,” Joe explained.

Mataro is often used to make blended red wine, fortified wine and rosé. The history and origins of the grape are uncertain, but it is generally associated with Spain where the Mataro grape, known as Monastrell, is one of the most widely planted varieties.

Stefano, who has studied wine in his motherland Italy, has launched an entire food-friendly Italian and Mediterranean inspired wine range exclusive to Cellarmasters. His award-winning wines are also served at his namesake famous restaurant Stefano’s in Mildura’s Grand Hotel.

Held in November each year the Royal Hobart Wine Show, is one of the most significant events on the Australian wine industry calendar.
