Their search takes them to the world’s finest wine regions and this year they were unanimous in their praise for the deliciously approachable fruit-filled Castelo Do Sulco Reserva 2016 from Portugal.
Why it's a winning wine
Among a field of 200 exceptional International wines, this Portuguese red stood out thanks to its incredible sense of place. Crafted at the historic Gradil estate near Lisbon, Portugal, a region with a long and great tradition of winemaking, it’s made from a blend of two of the most prestigious Portuguese varieties: Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, with a small amount of Syrah.
Master of Wine and renowned international wine expert Andrew Calliard first discovered this delicious wine at one of the world’s largest wine expos – Prowein in Europe, and he says, “with its slinky textures and ripe, dark berry fruits, this really is a delicious wine to drink.”
Soft, yet full bodied, its easy-going charm makes it wonderful to pair with a variety of foods. Our pick for this Portuguese delight is Peri Peri chicken with fresh gremolata.
About the region: Lisbon Portugal
Lisbon in Portugal is a fascinating land of old, walled towns and magnificent Templar castles with a long and great tradition of winemaking. The area was once considered a mecca for wine in the 19th century and these wines are currently experiencing a renaissance, for good reason.
The long, thin region runs alongside the Atlantic and has a broad range of microclimates. From windmills standing proud among lush undulating hills to desolate mountain ranges, it’s the second largest winemaking region in Portugal. It produces top quality wines, recognised nationally and internationally, but it’s the approachability of Lisbon wines that is infinitely charming. Fruity, and easy to enjoy, wines from this area are made to share.
