Dorrien Estate, Barossa Valley South Australia
Dorrien Estate is situated in South Australia’s famous Barossa Valley. Its wines have been awarded over 50 Trophies and 300 Gold medals, a galaxy of Winestate stars, 90+ points from James Halliday, and the winery itself has been rated 5-Stars by James Halliday every year since 2010.
Its list of winemakers past and present reads like a prestige Honour Roll and indeed, previous chief winemaker, Mark Robertson, was poached by Penfolds to oversee their entire range – including Grange!
The winery is not hard to find; you’ll see it easily as you’re driving from Nuriootpa to Tanunda, on the left hand side. However, there’s no cellar door, you won't find their wines in the bottle shop and their top Bin 1 wines are usually only available via a Reservation List, as demand often outstrips supply.
It seems Dorrien Estate, Australia’s largest small-batch winery (they also make boutique parcels of wine for small and local growers), likes to keep a low profile, preferring to save all the best stuff for a small group of loyal and exclusive winelovers.
