Meet Dovetail winemaker Richard Quodling

Richard has been close to wine since an early age. He grew up on the fringes of the Barossa and his first job on leaving school was hand-picking grapes. His passion for wine continued when he secured a cellarhand position with Australia’s most famous wine brand, Penfolds, where he worked for three vintages before moving to Miranda wines for a further four vintages. Then after a vintage working in the cellar for Grange Burge wines, he headed to Ireland to work in hospitality and travel throughout Europe. The call of the Barossa was strong, and Richard returned from Ireland with his wife and young family. He pursued a winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University, graduating in 2014 and today is skill behind the exceptional range of Dovetail Yarra Valley wines.

Richard’s favourite wine moment

Not a single moment, but a series of amazing days drinking affordable village wines with fabulous simple regional food in great company while an impoverished backpacker in Europe. The simple joy of these days led to the realisation that this was what I needed to do.

Richard’s winemaking philosophy

1. Get it right in the vineyard, source the best fruit possible

2. Respect the fruit and the process, allow the fruit to express itself in the finished wine

3. Enjoy wine as in integral part of a joyous shared experience with the people who mean the most to you
