Background:

Victorias Yarra Valley was once dairy country, but during the 1960s farmers recognised its potential as a premium wine region and started planting grapes. The cool climate, with frosty nights and sunny days, slows down the ripening process and elongates the ripening period. This gives grapes the optimal balance of physiological ripeness (berries and seeds) and sugar ripeness. Pinot Noir can be made into wishy-washy, tutti-frutti wines, says winemaker Meg Brodtmann. But you can get more structure with a bit of oak. Meg believes Pinot is the Yarras most exciting varietal, and loves the spectrum of flavours it offers. There are red raspberries, strawberries, and I get a licorice, aniseed-like character, she says. Download as PDF
