Background:

John Riddoch was so impressed with the quality of fruit grown in Penola that in 1890 he bought vast tracts of land at Katnook, creating the Coonawarra Fruit Colony. He then sold 10-acre lots to encourage settlement in the area, cementing Coonawarra's status as a premium wine region.Katnook is the premium label from the Wingara Wine Group, who also produce the Riddoch range. They are the biggest fruit growers in Coonawarra. The first vintage released won several trophies and the brand has continued to be successful on the show circuit. Katnook is an Aboriginal word meaning fat land - totally appropriate for Coonawarra, which is based on the famed terra rossa soils with the significant limestone subsoil. John Riddoch, the acknowledged father of Coonawarra, planted the first vineyard and it was in 1896, in the wool shed at Katnook that the second vintage was made by William Salter (later Saltram).
