Background:

Vintage 2009 across the south east of South Australia was again challenging. After an average rainfall during winter and a dry spring with little disease pressure, vineyard growth patterns and canopy development were considered excellent. However in January the whole region suffered 4 extreme heat days with the highest temperatures ever recorded in the south east of South Australia. The more moderate conditions of Mt Benson, with cooling breezes from proximity to the Southern Ocean tempered these extreme conditions. This combined with the excellent canopy growth, assisted in protecting the fragile bunches and a pattern of cooler daytime temperatures during February and early march allowed us to achieve positive fruit yields filled with fruit of great flavour intensity and fine tannin structures.Final blending of this wine in December 2009 has created, we believe the pick of all our Limestone Coast fruit from vintage 2009.
