Mornington Peninsula – the best of boutique Victorian wineThe Mornington Peninsula lies within the Port Phillip Zone just an hour south from Melbourne. With its distinct maritime climate, the Mornington Penninsula produces a vast array of quality wines, particularly excelling with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The region has a history of agricultural production supplying the Melbourne markets with various produce. Even though there was an initial foray into viticulture in the late 1800s it didn’t really take hold until the 1970’s. Many smaller, boutique sized vineyards and wineries followed, tapping into the Melbourne tourism market just an hour away. Even though Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the most successful varieties to come out of the Peninsula, the regions enjoys some success with Viogner, Pinot Gris, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.The Mornington Peninsula has some great wine events including Peninsula Piers and Pinots in March, Red Hill and Sorrento Long Lunches also in March, and the Winter Wine Weekend in June.
