McLaren ValeIf you were a winemaker looking for a great lifestyle, you couldn’t go far wrong with South Australia's McLaren Vale region. Situated on the Fleurieu Peninsula just a 45 minute drive from Adelaide, the region is close to beautiful beaches, and has a vibrant food culture, thanks to the large Italian community. And the wines it turns out are pretty spectacular too - in fact, McLaren Vale reds are considered some of the finest wines that Australia produces. They’ve won many international competitions, and have attracted the attention of Robert Parker, who has awarded many of these blockbuster reds impressive 90+ scores. Big name producers include Fox Creek, Maglieri, Coriole, Tintara, Seaview, Vasarelli, Tatachilla, D’Arenberg, Dog Ridge, Chapel Hill, Edwards and Chaffey and John Loxton. The big, warm, chocolatey Shiraz is the flagship variety of the region, though the earthy, distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon is also very well regarded. In the whites, Chardonnay and Semillon are probably the most popular varieties and, like the reds, are big, warm, and full of flavour. If you’re looking to impress, a McLaren Vale wine will always be a sure bet.
