NSW is home to Australia’s first vines, with cuttings of vines brought out with the First Fleet in 1788. The Hunter Valley is undoubtedly the most famous wine region of NSW, but there are plenty of others that are worth discovering, too. Mudgee and Cowra produce big, rich flavoursome reds and whites, whilst the cold climate and high altitudes of Orange produces cool, crisp, elegant wines of great finesse. Canberra, Hilltops and Young also provide crisp, cool-growing conditions, and deliciously elegant wines. Coastal regions include Port Macquarie in the north, and the Shoalhaven districts in the south, both of which enjoy considerable success in cellar doors and local restaurants. Finally, there’s the Riverina and Murray Darling districts, which produce the majority of NSW great value wines, popular both here and in export markets. From expensive boutique to bargain everyday drinkers, the wine regions of NSW have something to offer everybody.
