Wine regions of NSWNSW may be the birthplace of Australian wine, but many people are hard-pressed to name more than a couple of NSW wine regions. The Hunter Valley, just two hours drive from Sydney and famous for its long-lived Semillons and classic, earthy, Shiraz always features highly…but many people stop right there! Dig a little deeper, however, and plenty more will reveal themselves. There’s the high altitude cool climate region of Orange, the rich, warm-hearted Mudgee region, Cowra and its big, flavoursome Chardonnays – and that’s just the start. Coastal regions stretch as far north as Port Macquarie, and south to the Shoalhaven district. Other regions include the Southern Highlands region, the Hilltops region near Young, Tumbarumba in the Snowy Mountains – even Gundagai! Of course the largest area planted to vine is the Murray Darling/Riverina area, the ‘engine room’ of NSW, and a big player in our hugely successful export markets. These wines are known as ‘sunshine in a bottle’. Taste them and you’ll see why!
