SemillonSemillon is renowned around the world as the great Hunter Valley wine, and was once known as Hunter Valley Riesling. When young, this unoaked white wine style is austere with a unique mineral and citrus style that develops a complexity and depth over an extended period of time – up to 10 to 20 years. Wine critic Jancis Robinson notes this variety, 'makes extraordinary, age-worthy, full-bodied, dry whites in the Hunter Valley'. Elsewhere in Australia, oak is added to give complexity. Barossa Valley and Clare Valley are also notable regions. Often Margaret River Semillon is blended with Sauvignon Blanc to produce a delicious dry style blend. A popular white blend is Chardonnay Semillon. Sticky dessert wines such as Noble One are made from the Semillon grape and make a delicious food match with blue cheese.
