Australian Riesling

Riesling is a noble great variety that is at home in Germany. This versatile grape variety rarely, if ever sees oak, yet can be made in a variety of styles. Riesling has high levels of natural acidity that gives it great cellaring potential. Bone-dry steely examples are produced in France’s Alsace region and the Clare and Eden Valleys in Australia. Botrytis affected Riesling ranks amongst the world’s great dessert wines. Young Riesling typically has a pale straw colour with green hues with vibrant citrus fruit aromas and flavours and zesty acidity. Careful cellaring of Riesling sees its acidity soften, and it develops complex toasty and sometimes kerosene-like characters. Botrytised Riesling makes great dessert wines that are deeply coloured with complex honey and marmalade-like aromas and flavours.
