After 2 months of voting with nearly 1500 restaurants nominated, the winners of the inaugural Cellarmasters: The Wine Cellar BYO Restaurant Awards 2005 were announced on Wednesday 14th of September, 2005.
State winners honoured for their achievements included the restaurateurs of:
• Eminem (Leederville, Western Australia): A modern restaurant renowned for its fresh interpretation of Turkish cuisine. Eminem was closely followed by several restaurants including Spaghi’s and Clarke’s of North Beach.
• Casa Nostra Pizza Restaurant (Alice Springs, Northern Territory): Traditional family owned Italian restaurant. Casa Nostra offers casual Italian dining by the “river” and is famous for its vanilla slice.
• The Rising Sun Inn (Kensington, South Australia): Modern Australian cuisine is served in a heritage listed building, renowned as one of South Australia’s true dining pleasures. Runners up included Chianti Calssico and the ever popular Ying Chow.
• Okra (Hawthorne East, Victoria): Okra offers a fusion of Asian flavours including Thai, Malaysian and Indian in a 3 level café style setting. Other Victorian favourites include Choi’s and Bombay by Night.
• Azafran (Annerley, Queensland): Renowned for its friendly service and outstanding French/Australian menu Azafran has established itself as one of Brisbane’s most popular restaurants. It was in good company with Two Small Rooms proving another popular choice amongst voters.
• Salina Restaurant (Belmont South, New South Wales): A relative new comer. Salina has now been named best BYO restaurant in New South Wales and the ACT ahead of popular restaurants Billy Kwong’s, Oscillate Wildly and Restaurant Atelier.
• Kyari (Geeveston, Tasmania): Situated in the picturesque Huon Valley, the fine food of this small Café restaurant has proven popular with locals and visitors alike.
The winner was decided by people’s choice with diners in each state asked to nominate their favourite restaurant.
The top prize and our inaugural national winner went to Kyari - a small café restaurant in Geeveston Tasmania who inspired more nominations than any other.
Congratulations!
