The old rule of thumb for wine and food matching was to serve white wines with white meat, and red wine with red meats. But these days, a fusion of international cuisines with our wonderful fresh produce means there are lots more interesting flavours and combinations available. A better way to choose a wine is to match like with like: spicy food, spicy wine; robust food, robust wine; creamy food, creamy wine; sweet food, sweet wine etc. However it also pays to experiment a little. It won’t take you long to discover that some unusual combinations are amazingly good, or that some standard combinations surprisingly don’t work at all.
We’ve given some suggestions below to get you started, but only you can really truly discover the perfect food and wine combination. Give it a go – and enjoy yourself!
