335 Awards. 15 Growers. One legendary Langhorne Creek Red.
In just 19 vintages, the Langhorne Creek Area Red Blend has established itself as one of Langhorne Creek’s truly great wines, with a staggering 7 Trophies and 328 Medals, making it one of the region’s most highly awarded wines.
Industry insiders had known for years how good Langhorne Creek fruit was (Wolf Blass won the Jimmy Watson Trophy three years consecutively with fruit from this area, and used to call the region his ‘secret weapon’) but nobody else seemed aware that the region even existed. So, in 1991, fifteen Langhorne Creek grape growers got together and conceived a project that would demonstrate how good Langhorne Creek fruit could be.
Their plan? To choose the very best parcels of fruit from their vineyards and produce a ”Super Red’ that would showcase the quality of the region. With the help of award winning winemaker Michael Potts at Bleasdale, Langhorne Creek’s oldest winery, they made a wine that immediately struck gold, winning 1 Trophy, 2 Gold, 9 Silver and 12 Bronze medals on debut.
A unique and extremely limited wine
Every year these same fifteen growers give their best fruit to Michael at Bleasdale. In some vintages he makes a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant wine, while in others Shiraz dominates. If vintage conditions are favourable then a small portion of Malbec is added for additional complexity.
And while each vintage is slightly different to the next, there’s one thing that remains the same – the wine’s scarcity. They refuse to make more as they want to keep their high standard, but at the same time demand has been steadily increasing. The net result is that it’s now harder than ever to get a case of the majestic Langhorne Creek Area Red Blend.
